A case of leukemia with osseous changes of the spine

Abstract
|

|
A 7 year-old girl with a history of chest pain, ´vomiting, mild fever, dyspnea, headache, backache and facial edema for two months duration was admitted to the department of pediatrics. a Physical examination revealed marked anemia, hepatomegaly and mild kyphosis. The chest X-ray film showed enlarged hilar shadows and . bilateral perihilar infiltration. Radiologically the thoraco-lumbar spine showed marked diffuse and generalized osteoporotic changes, partly biconcave deformities of the vertebral bodies which were pronounced in the lumbar vertebrae and collapse with anterior wedge deformities of the first and second lumbar vertebrae especially on lateral projection. Microscopecally sternal and iliac bone marrow smears showed hypocellularity, granulocytic hypoplasia and mphocytic hyperplasia with increase of undifferentiated blast cells-these appearances indicating an acute symphocytic leukemia. A case acute leukemia with involvement of the spinal vertebrae is reported together with a brief review the literature.
